Chicago's tragic inferno of 1967 illustrates the need for accurate information-continually updated-on mains, valves and hydrants. As you may recall, the "fire-proof" McCormick Place proved to be quite the opposite.

In this infamous example, the appropriate fire flow tests were not performed. Firefighters trying to defeat the blaze discovered too late that there was not sufficient water supply behind the hydrants.

Had the fire mains been tested, it would have been discovered that certain valves were partially closed. The water department would have known to open them, and the history of McCormick Place might have been different today.
