Until the early 1990s, fire pump testers relied on the playpipe and hand-held pitots. For hydrant testers, water was discharged across the street and flow-rate was measured through a bouncing gauge needle on a hand-held pitot through an inexact orifice with a guessed-at coefficient. All this changed with the introduction of the Hose Monster®.
The Hose Monster product line:
Neutralizes high-flowing water safely and conveniently and minimizes damage to landscape
Enables precise flow-rate readings
Allows flow-rate measurements to be taken several feet from discharge, which will keep you dry
Saves time and money by conducting flow tests quicker and more accurately
The Hose Monster® will make your flow test job safe, accurate, and easy. Tests can be conducted in a small area and pavement is not even a requirement. Because of the unique thrust canceling design of the Hose Monster, tests can be conducted on an established lawn or a gravel surface without causing damage.
Water discharge is neutralized eliminating risk to people and property.
The Pitotless Nozzles™ and Hose Monsters are FM Approved for flow-rate accuracy. Flow-rates are laboratory proven.
Users can take remote flow readings away from the water discharge so you can stay dry.
Still using playpipes?
A playpipe at the end of a fire hose creates a high velocity stream of water that can be dangerous to personnel, destructive to property and requires a large clear area in which to conduct the test. To measure water flow, a pump tester must position his hand-held pitot at the outlet end of the playpipe in the middle of the stream of water. Playpipes have been known to separate and come apart during flow tests causing an unrestrained hose end to violently whip around. A broken playpipe during a flow test is an extremely dangerous situation for the people taking pitot readings and can contribute to costly downtime while a replacement is set up.
